Does the VA provide a free headstone for a veteran buried at Western New York National Cemetery?

Any veteran discharged under conditions other than dishonorable qualifies for a government headstone or marker at no cost when buried in a VA national cemetery. The cemetery orders it directly based on information the family provides, so this isn’t something a monument company sells or installs.

Can a spouse get a free government headstone if buried at the national cemetery too?

Yes, but only if the spouse is buried in the national cemetery itself. Spouses and dependents are not eligible for a free government marker if buried in a private cemetery like Evergreen Hill, only the veteran is eligible in that case. A spouse buried with the veteran at Western New York National Cemetery has their name and dates added to the same headstone at no cost.

If a veteran already has a private headstone at Evergreen Hill, can they still get a VA marker or medallion?

For veterans who died on or after November 1, 1990, the VA can furnish a supplemental government marker or a medallion to affix to an existing privately purchased headstone. This is a separate request from the original monument, and we can help a family understand how a medallion would be mounted on a stone we build or on an existing one.
