Serving Byron Families from Our Batavia Showroom

Byron sits on the northern edge of Genesee County, a farming town incorporated in 1820 that has more cattle than residents and two ZIP codes covering its three hamlets: the Byron hamlet center, South Byron along Route 237, and North Byron out near the Orleans County line. Families from all three come to us the same way, down Batavia-Byron Road southwest to 604 E Main Street. It’s a direct, no-highway drive that takes about 15 minutes.

Byron has two active nonprofit cemetery associations, each running its own grounds with its own permit process. We know how association-run cemeteries work in rural Genesee County and we coordinate directly with them on authorization, foundation requirements, and installation scheduling. Families don’t manage that process separately from us.

The town’s position near the Orleans County border puts it in a heavier lake-effect corridor than most of Genesee County. Winters here run longer and wetter than they do in Batavia city. That distinction matters more than people expect when it comes to granite foundations. The clay soil across this part of the county holds moisture and moves with every freeze-thaw cycle. Foundations that don’t clear New York’s 42 to 48 inch frost line can’t absorb that movement without eventually shifting the stone above.

Cemeteries We Work With in Byron

Byron Cemetery

Byron Cemetery is at 6440 Swamp Road in the Byron hamlet. The Byron Cemetery Association, a registered nonprofit, has operated the grounds since 1894. The cemetery itself predates the Association; the first recorded burial was in 1846, two years before the land was formally purchased. New lots are available in the northernmost section. The Association maintains burial records and the stone inscription list is available through the Byron Historical Society.
Like most nonprofit-run cemeteries in New York State, Byron Cemetery requires written authorization before any monument is placed or removed. We work directly with the Byron Cemetery Association on permit authorization, foundation specs, and installation timing. The stone doesn’t go into fabrication until the Association confirms the order.

North Byron Cemetery

North Byron Cemetery sits on Route 237 at what was historically the Barker Farm, on the east side of the road heading toward Holley. It’s in the North Byron hamlet, the northernmost of Byron’s three communities.

The North Byron Cemetery Association, also a registered nonprofit, manages the grounds. Families with plots there go through the same coordination process: we confirm requirements with the Association directly before any work begins.

How We Handle the Permit and Foundation Process

Under New York State law, nonprofit cemetery corporations have authority over what gets placed on their grounds. Each association sets its own requirements for foundation depth, permitted materials, and monument dimensions. We confirm those specifics with the relevant association before your order starts, so nothing gets fabricated to measurements that won’t be approved.
Byron’s clay-heavy glacial soil and northern exposure make foundation depth a practical concern, not just a regulatory one. We build footings below the frost line as a standard practice here. If an existing family monument at Byron Cemetery has started to lean or separate at the base, monument restoration can often correct it without replacing the stone itself.

When a Family Monument Needs Attention

The oldest monuments at Byron Cemetery date to the 1840s. Some of those early stones are still standing straight. The ones that haven’t held up usually share a common problem: the original foundation didn’t go deep enough to handle the clay soil movement that Byron’s winters produce year after year. When you visit a family monument, these are the things worth looking at closely.

01

The stone is tilting, even by a small degree, relative to the ground around it

02

Cracks have appeared at the base or through the die above it

03

Green or black biological growth has taken hold across the face

04

Lettering that was once easy to read is now hard to make out from a standing position

Granite Selection and Design for Byron Families

The Batavia showroom carries physical samples from a granite color selection of more than 90 named options. Academy Black is consistently popular for families who want portrait or scene etchings, since the contrast on dark granite is the strongest. Dakota Mahogany runs toward a warmer tone and is a common choice for companion stones. Seeing samples in person, in outdoor light, is worth the drive before any decision gets made. Our guide on choosing a granite color covers the key differences to look for before your visit.
Byron is farming country, and that shows up in the etching requests we get from this part of Genesee County. Agricultural scenes, equipment, fields, and barns are among the most common custom etching choices here, alongside portraits and religious motifs. Our in-house fine artist works from photographs the family provides. If you’re still weighing materials, our granite vs marble comparison explains exactly how each material holds up under the freeze-thaw conditions this area gets every winter.
Byron’s veteran population runs noticeably higher than the Genesee County average. Families honoring a veteran often want to understand what the VA headstone and marker benefit actually covers before deciding what to add privately. We can walk through both options in plain terms so you know exactly what you’re working with.
